Yeah we had an identical flex to that one and the off-center wiper pattern always bugged me

TIL Toyota’s weird double wipers preceded the Camry wagon of the 90's.

A CR-V, RAV, and Equinox at the same stoplight? Are we about to witness a very tepid drag race?

I hope that’s broken. If Ford designed it like that, then... well, I don’t know what, but that’s pathetic.

Kinja'd!!!1

Oh, it isn’t. Look at the top of the arc, the wiper doesn’t have any room to be any longer. With a window so narrow it probably should have had multiple wipers...or that single wiper better placed.

Why didn’t they just move the CHMSL to the top and put the wiper in the center? If you have to suck, suck with symmetry.

Well, if you have to have a quadrant of the rear window clear, it needs to be that one. It corresponds to getting a view toward the back corner, and aligns with the driver-mirror-rear window neutral mirror-glance angle. The solution most carmakers go with, the wiper mount on the lower gate, has its own problems.

So glad the wife was anti-Ford for some reason. I was pushing for a Flex instead of the Durango.

That wiper pattern would have annoyed me to no end.

Kinja'd!!! RamblinRover Luxury-Yacht > Ash78, voting early and often

Kinja'd!!!2

I would imagine because most people looking back aren’t looking to their back left corner blind spot, behind the driver’s seat, and would check their left mirror for that. This way, more usable clear window; from their perspective, no reason to stay symmetrical. It’s silly, but most people’s awareness of their car is front corners and right/center rear - because it’s a long look with a limited view at the passenger mirror, and the balance of mirror use rests heavily on left mirror and windshield mirror. That reliance on right rear corner position is also tied into the head-over-right-shoulder backing up instincts.

I mean, it’s not by accident that so many car makers went so long with the passenger mirror as an option. It’s just not as important as the other two, and a corollary is that you look back *and right* with the windshield mirror. Just how it is.

Makes sense. If given the choice of sides, this is the correct one. Similarly, if I ever have to hang up a coat in the car, it goes directly behind the driver.

This just seems like it could have been executed better.

Kinja'd!!!2

How do you know it’s a feature on a Ford? It’s ingeniously simple, cleverly executed, allowed the use of cheap and shitty parts in a way that will probably be reliable (but not always), and should not have needed to exist *like that* in the first place, because it’s addressing its own problem or a related one.

It’s like German engineering, except elegantly simple apart from being drunk. It’s thinking outside the box by means of being in a completely different box which will not be abandoned under any circumstances because this box, man, it’s cooler than that other box.

Kinja'd!!!0

Up top in the middle would have made the view *down* and to the sides for shit, though, and view of the corners backing up with the mirrors/etc. would suffer. Ash’s idea isn’t bad, though I contend there are some reasons to be offset... if not quite that impossibly short.

Kinja'd!!! His Stigness > RamblinRover Luxury-Yacht
02/15/2018 at 16:55

Kinja'd!!!0

Ash’s idea is better. But Ford’s design makes no sense since the driver’s side is still blocked.

Look at the Cressida in the replies here, and compare that. Sucky dead spot behind the driver (in JDM) even with dual wipers, because it’s just not as important.

Kinja'd!!! His Stigness > RamblinRover Luxury-Yacht
02/15/2018 at 17:05

Kinja'd!!!0

Ah but JDM is RHD, so the way the wipers go it would clear the driver’s side of the window.

But why is this an issue when every Golf ever made* has the wiper in the center and clears the window so a driver on either side can see?

*I’m assuming every Golf.

Kinja'd!!! RamblinRover Luxury-Yacht > His Stigness
02/15/2018 at 17:12

Kinja'd!!!0

The RHD was what I was referring to - you get a partial dead zone in a bar right behind the driver (though the second wiper gets a lot more clear), but the *lower corner* that’s getting swept out is the one opposite the driver.

Ford were simply being stubborn. They presumably wanted the wiper above the trim line come hell or high water, and presumably an engineer decided to put it where it would only mostly suck and look like ass.

Also, infantile quibble: I had a Golf Mk. 1 pickup (“Rabbit pickup”) that did not have a rear wiper. Not that it matters.

Kinja'd!!! Stapleface > Duck Duck Grey Duck FTMFW!

It messes up symmetry, but I can kind of get it. You’re more likely to look out that portion of the back window then behind the driver. It really needs a two wiper system.

Kinja'd!!! His Stigness > RamblinRover Luxury-Yacht
02/15/2018 at 17:19

Kinja'd!!!0

I kind of want to delete the wiper on the Golf. I don’t really need it because the windows are constantly having sealant added to them, so nothing ever sticks.

Kinja'd!!! Urambo Tauro > Duck Duck Grey Duck FTMFW!

Kinja'd!!!1

This makes me mad. I’m sure the rationale has something to do with budgeting constraints and choosing which side needs it more, but it’s still stupid. I don’t even want to hear about visibility being less important in the rear. There’s a window there, and if part of it needs a wiper, then the whole thing does.
